Design and Fabrication Specialist

Job Description

Summary:

This role is focused on supporting the development and enhancement of high-performance door systems designed for demanding applications in refrigerated, life science, industrial, commercial, and security sectors.

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Engineering & Business Processes, the Design & Fabrication Specialist will handle new product development and enhancement tasks, including design, prototyping, fabrication, and testing. Responsibilities also include creating drawings and models, and collaborating with designers on detailed design and documentation.

The ideal candidate will thrive in a collaborative, technical environment, demonstrating innovation and creativity to meet evolving customer needs for specialized designs, enhancements, and modifications.

Responsibilities:

- Collaborate closely with design teams to create detailed plans and models.
- Fabricate components from a range of materials including metals, plastics, composites, wood, and fabrics using various processes such as cutting, punching, machining, forming, welding, and 3D printing.
- Engage with suppliers to obtain design input, quotations, and purchase raw materials and components.
- Ensure parts meet design specifications and quality standards.
- Assemble and install prototypes for testing, oversee the testing process, and document results.
- Manage project planning to ensure timely completion of projects.
- Work with engineers, designers, and other stakeholders to refine designs and address technical issues.
- Occasionally design and fabricate parts for maintenance repairs or production tools.
- Maintain accurate records of design iterations, materials used, and fabrication processes.
- Conduct product tests, document findings, and report results.
- Adhere to safety protocols and demonstrate safe working practices.
Required Skills and Competencies:

- Proficiency in CAD software for design and modeling, with SolidWorks preferred.
- Hands-on fabrication skills with experience in various materials and processes.
- Strong understanding of materials, fabrication techniques, and rapid prototyping methods.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and capacity for innovation under tight deadlines.
- Effective communication skills and a collaborative teamwork approach.
- Experience with PLC and microprocessor control systems is a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering documents such as drawings and schedules.
- Attention to detail and commitment to high-quality craftsmanship.
