Job Description
Overview:

We are looking for an Inpatient Coding specialist to take on a Supervisory role for the inpatient coders within a global coding team. Under the general guidance of the Director Coding, this position supervises the Inpatient and observation coders that assign diagnostic and procedure codes to patient medical records for billing and statistical purposes. This position ensures that all codes assigned are compliant with the current coding guidelines, regulations and facility requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Organize, direct, and coordinate daily job functions of the inpatient coding teams.
  • Carry out accurate, timely, and consistent coding of data as well as issue queries when necessary and resolve them in a timely manner.
  • Provide assistance in creating or/and reviewing medical coding related Work Instructions (WIs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
  • Educate providers and other health care professionals on proper documentation practices to ensure accurate billing practices.
  • Apply coding knowledge to lead the DRG, MCC/CC, hierarchal condition categories, and risk adjustment coding efforts as well as supportive activities.
  • Perform assessment of coding applications/tools and suggest the necessary input.
  • Serve as a resource for information and clarification on accurate and ethical coding, documentation standards, querying, coding guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure all inpatient coding processes meet state and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT and HCPCS coding, including continuous knowledge of quarterly and annual code changes, coding rules and guidelines as well as LCD/NCD guidelines.
  • Conduct ongoing performance assessment of staff competency and provide timely and appropriate feedback.
  • Perform continuous quality and compliance review of coded records and ensure accuracy by the coding specialists.
  • Work closely with central billing, clinical documentation improvement program and other services to assist and/or coordinate in resolving account, coding, and charge capture issues.

Education and Experience:
  • Current CPC and/or CIC from AAPC, or equivalent from AHIMA
  • Associate's degree Health Information Technology or related field or 7 yeas exp. Bachelor’s degree in related preferred.
  • Must have at least 7 years recent experience coding hospital/facility inpatient
  • Practice Management software and EMR software exposure
  • Microsoft Excel, Word, SharePoint, and Outlook skills
  • Utilization of Codify, 3M, and Optum 360 Coding programs.
